Stein Kaasa has served as deputy director of MATRIX since its establishment in 2022. After retiring last year, he is now stepping down from the role and passing the torch to Tonje Lundeby.

Tonje Lundeby is a researcher at the Department of Oncology at Oslo University Hospital and co-leader of the European Palliative Care Research Centre (PRC). She brings extensive experience in patient-centred cancer research and research leadership.

Lundeby has over 15 years of experience in health services research, implementation research, and research in palliative and patient-centred cancer care. She has played a key role in several large national and international research projects, including multiple EU-funded initiatives under Horizon Europe, and is involved in the leadership of international consortia such as MyPath. She also participates in a number of European collaborations.

Through her leadership roles, Lundeby has gained significant experience in building international research networks and coordinating complex projects across countries and disciplines. Her research particularly focuses on the implementation of evidence-based practice, patient-reported outcomes, digitalization, and the development of patient-centred healthcare services.

I am excited to take on the role of deputy director in MATRIX and look forward to further developing knowledge and strengthening the implementation of patient-centred cancer care. At the same time, I am focused on how we can achieve even closer collaboration and better synergies across work packages and partners in the coming years of the project, says Lundeby.

Lundeby holds a master’s degree in social psychology and a PhD in clinical communication. She has been active in MATRIX from the beginning, with a key role in work packages 3 and 5. She will continue to play an important role in these work packages and bring a patient-oriented perspective into MATRIX leadership.

Centre director Åslaug Helland welcomes Lundeby into the MATRIX leadership team:

Tonje already knows MATRIX well, and I am very pleased that she is now joining the centre’s leadership. I am confident that she will help strengthen collaboration and the centre’s ability to deliver results in the years ahead, says Helland.
